3 Things To Look For When Buying Two-Way Radios For Hiking

Posted on

In today's world, people certainly think more about smartphones than two-way radios when it comes to communicating with their friends and family. When you're going hiking, however, there is a chance that you will find yourself in an area where your smartphone just won't have the best reception—if it will have reception at all. This is why bringing two-way radios along is smart. Then, if you get lost, get hurt, or otherwise want to communicate with your hiking companions, you won't have to worry about relying on spotty cell phone reception. These are a few things to look for when buying two-way radios for hiking.

1. The Longest Possible Range

First of all, you'll want to compare the range on the various two-way radios that are available and choose the one with the longest possible range. Even though the range that is stated on the box might not be the same range that you'll get when you're out in the woods and dealing with dense trees and other factors that could affect reception, looking for a longer range can help ensure that you will be able to keep in contact with the people you are hiking with.

2. Batteries That Can Be Recharged

If you hit the hiking trails a lot, you may find yourself buying a whole lot of batteries for your two-way radios, which can get expensive. This is why it's generally best to look for two-way radios that have rechargeable batteries. You can recharge them at home, but it's also smart to bring along a portable camping battery recharger, such as one that operates off of solar power, so that you can recharge your batteries as needed.

3. Water Resistance

You never know what kind of conditions you might find yourself in when you hit the hiking trail. It might start raining, or you might find yourself in a pond, river, or lake. If so, you do not want to worry about destroying your two-way radio or not being able to get in contact with your companions for help. This is why it's smart to look for two-way radios that are resistant to water.

As you can see, there are a few things that you should look for when buying two-way radios for your hiking trips. Look for these three things, and you should be able to get the most possible benefit out of your new two-way radios.
